North Canton Snake Removal
Description and Appearance of Snakes
There are two distinct types of snakes; venomous and non-venomous. They are all legless reptiles that slither. They also use their tongues to constantly taste the air in order to gain information about their environment. Each type of snake also has characteristics that are indicative of the venomous or non-venomous quality.
Venomous Snakes
Venomous snakes that can be found in the United States are rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, copperheads, and coral snakes. Most venomous snakes are pit vipers and they use infrared receptors to navigate and find prey. They have heads that are triangle-shaped with pits located between the eyes and nostrils. Many of them also have elliptical-shaped pupils in their eyes. Rattlesnakes have a distinct “rattle” on the end of their tail that they use to alert predators and other animals to keep away.
Non-venomous Snakes
Non-venomous snakes are the classification for most of the snakes in the United States. These snakes, such as garter snakes, prey on rodents, like rats and mice, and can be beneficial to have around a property. They have narrow heads and do not have sensory pits like the pit vipers do. Snakes can range in size from fairly small to a few feet in length.
Habitat of Snakes
Like any animals, different snakes will adapt to different environments, depending on their needs. They can live in trees or even the ocean and everywhere in between. Snakes will live in areas that are dark, damp, and offer plenty of cover for them to move around unseen. They will also use abandoned burrows that were made by other animals. Snakes are cold-blooded reptiles that need to warm themselves in the sun early in the day in order for them to be active for the rest of the day.
Entry and Dangers in Snakes
Areas that are more susceptible to having rodents like homes, barns, gardens and yards are going to be areas where snakes will be found. Under rocks, wood piles, and leaf litter serve as areas for them to retreat to digest their rodent meals. They will also enter these areas in search of a suitable place to hibernate during the winter. Snakes will only bite if they are cornered, threatened, or grabbed. Snake bites from non-venomous snakes are not dangerous but can leave painful puncture wounds. Venomous snake bites, on the other hand, require medical attention but are rarely fatal. Snakes do not cause any type of damage to a building or property.
Control and Removal of Snakes
Reducing possible food sources is the first step in controlling possible snake issues in and around a property. Following proper rodent exclusion techniques is the best way to reduce these food sources. Snake-proof fencing is another option for protecting children in the yard, but it can be expensive. Sealing up and repairing gaps and cracks around the home is an important part of the exclusion protocol. It may be necessary to install screens in certain areas that are difficult or impossible to seal. Enlisting the assistance of trained professionals is a great way to help to keep these slithering reptiles away from and out of a home and yard.
