Akron Beaver Removal

Description and Appearance

Beavers are the largest rodents in North America and have the unique ability to alter their given environment. Their alterations can be incredibly beneficial for the are in which they live by raising the water table, refilling aquifers, and establishing environments where other creatures can live. These rodents’ mate for life and build underwater lodges in which to raise their young (kits).

Beavers are an animal that can appear to be uncoordinated on land, but they are great swimmers and they can hold their breath for up to 15 minutes. They can reach lengths of up to 3 feet long, with brown, water-repellent fur, and a flat tail that aids in their ability to swim. These creatures have large front teeth that allow them to chew through trees and branches for the purpose of building their lodges and in order to gather food (which includes leaves, bark, and aquatic plants).

Habitat

These creatures require wooded areas that are near streams, rivers, marshes, and ponds. By creating dams, they are able to establish a suitable living area by transforming low-lying areas into wetland habitats. Once these wetlands are created, they use sticks and mud to build their domed lodges which are only accessible underwater. These structures can be used by multiple generations of beavers. Riverbanks can also be burrowed into to create a natural lodge for them to live in.

Entry and Damage of Property

These are not an animal that is going to enter a home or building because there is nothing they need inside. Low-lying agricultural areas, roads, yards, and timber operations can experience damage because of, either the flooding as a result of their dams or the damage they do to the trees they fell. They do not pose a threat to people as far as bites are concerned, but they can contaminate water with different diseases and parasites like giardiasis.

Beaver Control

Beavers are protected animals because they are considered to be fur-bearing and it is only legal to trap or kill them during a prescribed season. This creates an established season as is true with deer and turkey. This conservation was enacted because there was a time when they were brought to the edge of extinction. If these creatures are causing an issue on a property, it is necessary to get the authorization from a local wildlife agency before it is removed outside of the trapping season.

Beaver Removal

It is illegal throughout most of the United States to destroy an established den or dam of these creatures. The wetlands that they create with their dams are an important part of a local ecosystem and can cause more harm than good if removed. There are a few methods that can be employed to control or remove the troublesome creatures. One method is to utilize drainage systems so that the water levels can be managed so that both humans and animals are happy. Traps can be used to remove problem beavers, but they need to be set by professionals in a very specific way and location to be effective.
